At the end of this week, North Americans will come together to celebrate the country’s independence with a nationwide blanket of patriotic parades, parties and get-togethers on Friday 4 July.

The day is marked by a public holiday in the US and to get the ad market in the spirit of the annual antics we’ve delved into the shots archives to dig out and curate a selection of our favourite patriotic spots created in the name of the stars and stripes.

Friends and family

Friends and family will no doubt play a massive part in your plans this year, but the food will go a long way in boosting your party and social credentials. Grey New York’s spot for the NFL presents an assortment of scenes featuring classic characters form US TV as they prepare for the ultimate party with plenty of chips, dips and other light snacks. Be sure to stock up with plenty of beer, food and fancies for your guests if it’s your turn to host this time round.

In the jeans

If Friday is hard to picture now and you have a mountain of work to get through before then, sit back, relax, and take a look at Cary Fukunaga’s great film for Levi’s through Wieden+Kennedy Portland. Released at the end of June in 2009 ready for the 4July celebrations, the film offers a mature tone and visual style to promote patriotism and people-power across America. Addressing life, love and freedom the film presents a bout of raw imagery and emotion that is sure to strike a chord in light of this week’s celebrations.

Patriotic partners

Chrsyler tugs on the patriotic heartstrings in this spot that reels of all that is great about the brand thanks to its strong American heritage and identity. Bob Dylan follows in the footsteps of Eminem and Clint Eastwood to channel the message and the spot was created by Detroit agency GlobalHue. With visual references to the American flag, a diner, baseball and Route 66 the spirit of the spot makes it a shoo-in on our My shots playlist.

Animated Anthem

Speaking of spirit, nothing sums up the American patriotic vibe more than the country’s national anthem. Passion’s spot for MetLife, set in the New Jersey-based stadium that the insurance firm sponsors, sees the characters of iconic animated series Peanuts emerge from the stands to give an emotional rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner. American or not, surely you didn’t think this week would pass without hearing that famous piece of music?

Phone friends

But not everyone will be partying the day through come Friday 4 July. Some will seize the opportunity to get patriotic in their own way by hosting smaller scale gatherings and lower key events. DDB Chicago’s iconic Whassup!? spot for Budweiser doesn’t necessarily drip with wild party spirit, but it does promote the freedom and expression that Independence Day is all about.
